How long does therapy take?
There is no set time for the length of therapy. I have training in EMDR, Solution Focused, Narrative and CBT therapies. The number of sessions can range from one session to 20 sessions. However, the average range is around 12 to 15 sessions. At your first session we will make treatment goals together and during your therapeutic journey we check in and review those goals to make sure you are working towards them.
One more note: if you are using insurance they do dictate the length of therapy. If you choose to use your insurance, we will need to review the criteria for how many sessions they will allow.
What is the first session like?
The first session for all types of therapy could be looked at as an assessment/interview. We’ll spend some time getting to know each other. I’ll give you some more information about my background and answer any question you may have. I’ll ask you some in depth questions to get an idea of your background and situation. We will talk about your reason(s) for seeking therapy, and how I can be helpful to you.
What about medication vs. psychotherapy?
It is well established that the long-term solution to mental and emotional problems and the pain they cause cannot be solved solely by medication. Instead of just treating the symptom, therapy addresses the cause of our distress and the behavior patterns that curb our progress. You can best achieve sustainable growth and a greater sense of well-being with an integrative approach to wellness. Working with your medical doctor you can determine what’s best for you, and in some cases a combination of medication and therapy is the right course of action.
Do you prescribe medication?
I am not able to prescribe medication. Only a psychiatrist or your family doctor can prescribe medication. If you are currently taking medication it is important that you inform me of all the medication so I can have all accurate information.
